Copper Pipes: Behind the Walls

If you ask the average American what kind of plumbing they have in their home they probably won’t be able to tell you. Do YOU know what types of pipes are flowing through your home?
The dangers of not knowing could cost you thousands! In the first part of our 2 part series regarding plumbing, we’re going to discuss the dangers of having Cast Iron pipes in your plumbing system and the cost of a system failure.

PIPE TALK

Cast iron plumbing pipes were the most commonly used plumbing systems in older homes. Cast iron pipe is only viable until the point that it begins to rusts. Cast iron plumbing is usually running through the slab of a home which makes it very difficult and expensive to troubleshoot leaks and repair even the smallest of issues.
Cast iron pipes also corrode and deteriorate over time. Pipe deterioration can lead to water damage, water back-ups in the house, clogged or slow drains, leaking sewage, pest infestation, and possible health risks to building occupants. Water damage may take one or more of the following forms:
Back-ups into the house
Warped or separated wood floors
Tinted (raised) floor tiles
Water-stained floor tiles (grout)
Water-stained or discolored carpet, rug, or mat
Foul smells from sewer gases
Roach infestation
Most insurance companies are requiring people to change out their older metal piping plumbing systems with newer technologies in order to have coverage and/or make a claim. In fact, dozens of law firms across the country are assisting people with these lawsuits as you read this.
If you’re in an older home with steel or cast iron pipes, we recommend upgrading your home’s plumbing system immediately. Rust or lead poisoning are just two of the dangers when it comes to these older systems. Switching out today will save you a LOT of trouble tomorrow. Busted galvanized steel or cast iron pipes can rupture, creating as much as $30,000 in water damage to your home that your insurance company may not be willing to cover. You can prevent such a costly emergency for a fraction of that cost by proactively getting a re-pipe of your homes plumbing system.
